More than Just Desserts

CBN members and guests gathered at Hotel Felix on 27th September for an evening of wine tasting with cheeses and a mouth watering assiette aux desserts.

Waitrose Cambridge supplied a great selection of wines and cheeses along with Brodie Ballantine from the wine department and Julie Longland the Waitrose Cambridge cheese expert to tutor our tastebuds. Favourites included Ossau Iraty sheeps milk cheese from the Pyrenees, La Begude Limouox Chardonnay from a vineyard owned by expats James and Catherine Kinglake, and a glorious Maury dessert wine to accompany a plate of puddings that was a feast for the eyes as well as tastebuds.

The latest in virtual office services

When you are busy or on the move it is sometimes difficult to keep up with phone calls, yet missed calls can often mean a missed business opportunity. Did you know for instance that 80% of callers hang up when greeted by an answering phone,
80% of first-time callers don’t bother to call back if they get an engaged tone and
75% of callers refuse to wait beyond the 6th ring.

A virtual office service means that calls never go unanswered and, in practice, you get all the benefits of your own personal assistant from as little as £3.00 per day.

Working from home

Jacqui Dodds, Partner at WKH Accountants, advises on tax considerations for use of home as office.

Strictly speaking, an expense which is for both business and private purposes cannot be deducted. However, where claims for use of home as office are concerned, HM Revenue & Customs will normally allow an apportionment to be made between business and personal expenses provided that the business element is not excessive and has been calculated on a reasonable basis.

CBN November Event: Mentoring Success

7th November at Lucy Cavendish
A mentor: a wise and trusted guide and adviser

When you meet people who are successful in their field frequently you will discover that they have been or are being supported by someone or a group of people who have shared their time, insight, knowledge, energy, experience and most of all have inspired, believed, challenged and encouraged their ability to develop.

This joint event is organised by CBN and AWISE (Association for Women in Science and Engineering) and is sponsored by Business Links. It sets out to examine the mentoring process, help a person trying to find a way, scheme or mentor, perhaps inspire some to consider being a mentor in some way and think of some of the issues of peer to peer mentoring.
